Robert James Donaldson (1927-2007)

DONALDSON, Robert (Bob) James, February 11, 1927 - June 1, 2007, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall". With great sadness we announce the passing of a wonderful man. He was the beloved and loving husband of 49 years to the late Jean Smith, and a devoted father of Brenda (Roger Sarty), Ian (Deborah Scott), and Sheila (Rob Fisher). Predeceased by his parents Robert Donaldson and Ellen Mellish, his sisters Elsa (the late Wally Bosas), Rose, Edna O'Leary and Laura Hirtle, and his brothers Gordon (Rose), Harry, Doug and Cecil. Cherished brother of Evelyn, Diane (Michael Iles), Wilfred, Ellen (the late Ernie Mash), and Joan. Brother-in-law of Helen and Arnold Beaudoin, Merle and Marcel Martin, Doris Sinden, Jack and Gina Smith, and the late Mary and Archie MacMillan. Dear uncle to many nieces and nephews. Bob was a man with a thirst for knowledge, an appreciation for education and an enormous love and loyalty for his family. He was a constant source of support and encouragement to his children, always believing in them, and instilling in them a strongly held work ethic and high personal standards - "If you know, in your heart, that you've done your best, that's all you can ask of yourself." He was curious about the world and, upon leaving the family farm in Buckingham, Quebec, he had adventures "riding the rails," traveling to Western Canada, working on various farms, in logging camps, and fighting forest fires. He later fell in love with the spirited Jean Smith and began a family. While holding a full-time job, Bob also pursued studies to become a hydro electric station operator, becoming a long-time employee of Hydro Quebec, in Chelsea. He took life seriously, but there was always a silver vein of humour that would surface in unexpected moments, especially in his later years. Friends and family are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue on Thursday, June 7th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., followed by a short reception. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at Templeton United Church, 942 Notre Dame Street, Gatineau on Friday at 1:00 p.m., interment at Dunning Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia Research Fund of Canada. Bob will be so sorely missed, but he is now reunited with his beloved Jean. Love you always, Dad. 'Til we meet again. Ottawa Citizen, 4 June 2007.
